Drugs to Help People Stay Young
In the NY Times today in the health section there was an article titled "Quest for a Long, Long Life Gains Scientific Respect". Low calorie diets are believed to help people to live longer. In fact in a study mice and rats put on a diet of 30 percent less calories have been found to live 40 percent longer. Sirtris Pharmaceuticals is developing drugs that increase the positive affects of a low calorie diet. In particularly, resveratrol, a drug found in most red wines has been found to activate sirtuins which are proteins. By activating sirtuins the body will build greater resistance to the diseases of aging. The company is also researching other chemicals that increase both health and lifespan. Christoph Westphal, co-founder of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals said "In five or six or seven years there will be drugs that prolong longevity".
