Are You One Of The 37%?

According to a 2010 Genworth Financial and Age Wave study, 37% of people who care for a loved one either quit their jobs or reduce their hours at work and spend around $4000 a year on expenses related to their caregiving role.  Are you one of the 37%?

Leaving a job means giving up not only the salary but opportunities for promotions, health benefits, retirement plans, etc.   In addition, 56% of caregivers tapped into their retirement savings to care for a loved one at some point in  2010.  With the amount of money caregivers spend out-of-pocket they could afford a hired home care worker a few days a week to assist their loved one at home while they go to work.  Can't afford full time care?  Consider diversifying the care with an adult day care program, home care services from the county, and/or meals on wheels.

Balance work and caring for a loved one by talking to your employer about flexible hours (arriving earlier and leaving earlier) and working from home.

Balance your financial costs of caregiving by looking into state programs that provide services and assistance to seniors at home by calling your Area Office On Aging http://eldercare.gov/Eldercare.NET/Public/Index.aspx.  Medicaid may be a good option for your loved one to afford long term care at home or in a nursing home.

Last, check for your loved one's eligibility for benefits.  You can visit https://www.benefitscheckup.org/index.cfm?partner_id=58
or speak to a benefits counselor through your local office for the aging.
