When families call our office they often are indecisive about how much care to utilize through our services. We could easily say that most seniors are at risk for an injury or accident due to the natural loss of sensory skills and strength as we age. But that does not mean that most seniors need 24/7 care at home. They can adapt to their needs as they change and slowly add on to the schedule of visits through a hired caregiver.
The best way to analyze the safety risk is to consider the history, present and future. For example, my mom fell last year in her bathroom. She now has grab rails, a shower chair, and rubber mat to avoid slipping again. However, she is still weak and unsteady on her feet. I could monitor her for the next six months to see how she does because right now she's adapted to the bathroom. Therefore, I only need a home care worker to visit a few days a week.
Another scenario would be that dad has mixed up his medications twice in the past month. His dementia seems to be getting worse. An adjustment in his memory medication could help but if he mixes up his medication again, it could result in him getting sick or needing hospitalization. Therefore, I need to control the medication and have someone there to make sure he takes it correctly.
The answer to how much care or coverage to have for your loved one lies in his/her risks related to a deficit in their abilities. Memory, unsteady balance, poor nutrition, and weakness when walking are the top factors that often lead to safety risks at home.
