Recognizing Care Needs During the Holidays

Families often recognize care needs after a visit during the holidays.   Sometimes the elderly loved one has been concealing health issues that require the need for assistance.  Other times, cognitive impairments are more apparent when families visit and see signs of neglect in their loved one’s health and environment.   Below are signs to be aware of that your loved one may need help at home:

* Unopened mail.

* Messy household.

* Expired or rotting food.

* Unfilled prescriptions and missed medications.

* Appears disheveled.

* Has short-term memory loss and/or confusion.

* Unpaid bills.

* Cuts, bruises, scrapes, or other injuries that could be results of falls.

* Underweight or overweight.

* Vehicle has signs of a fender bender or accidents.

* Notices in mail about missed doctor appointments.

What should you do?

*  Get your loved one to a doctor for a physical evaluation.

*  Go through the bills and start calling companies to sort out insurance lapses, utility bills, and any other bills that have gone unpaid.

*  Hire a cleaning service to do heavy duty housekeeping and to provide ongoing cleaning services.

*  Hire a home care service to make regular scheduled visits to provide cooking, transportation, errands, chores, medication reminders, etc.

*  Consider installing a personal emergency response system to send an alert if your loved one falls in the home.

*  Check over household for safety concerns such as, old pipes, loose wires, slippery area rugs, cluttered walkways or stairways, etc.
